Bluxome was born out of the vision of a few like-minded friends and generous investors that enjoy making and drinking great wine. A few of the people you might bump into at the winery include:


WINEMAKER

Webster Marquez has spent the better part of two decades on the northern coast of Northern California, making well-balanced, food-friendly wine, most notably Pinot Noir. As one of the co-founders of Anthill Farms, a tiny Sonoma winery that’s well known as one of the best Pinot producers in California, Web sources his Pinot grapes from small, mostly cool climate, meticulously-farmed vineyards. He spends decidedly more time in the vineyard than the winery, making decisions alongside the farmers to help guide the fruit to its greatest potential, then picks it at its optimum for the elegant style of wine he likes to make.

There’s a lot of chatter these days about wines with a “sense of place,” which is basically just English for terroir—the particular character of the fruit based on weather, soil and other aspects under the firm domain of Mother Nature. With his time spent in the vineyard as well as his light touch in the winery, that’s precisely what Web is dedicated to teasing out. He limits manipulation with whole-cluster, open-top fermentation in small batches, refrains from racking, eschews commercial yeast, and ages in just 10-15% new oak. Or in his words, he “lets the wine become what it naturally wants to be.”

When Matt discovered Web’s winemaking style (along with his east coast personality), he knew both were right up his alley for his vision of making Russian River Valley wine in SOMA. Web joined Bluxome Street Winery in 2012 and brought with him his entrepreneurial spirit, extending Bluxome’s offerings beyond Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc to include Chardonnay, Syrah, Rosé, and even a dessert wine called “The Hounds.” You’ll find many of these wines on menus in San Francisco and across the US, but the best place to find them is right in our tasting room at 53 Bluxome Street.
